The Climate Resilience and Environmental Management Program aims to enhance the adaptive capacities of vulnerable communities to deal with the impacts of climate change, focusing on the sustainable use of natural resources and environmental conservation. The program builds community resilience by promoting climate-smart agriculture, water management practices, reforestation, and ecosystem restoration to protect and restore vital ecosystems. In areas like Wajir, where pastoralism and agriculture are central to livelihoods, this program is critical in mitigating the negative impacts of climate change while enabling communities to adapt and thrive.

Climate Resilience and Environmental Management
Program Objectives
Enhance Climate Resilience of Communities
Build the capacity of communities to adapt to climate change impacts, such as droughts, floods, and temperature extremes.
Promote Sustainable Natural Resource Management
Improve management of land, water, and biodiversity to maintain ecosystem services and reduce environmental degradation. Implement sustainable farming, pasture management, and water conservation practices to preserve vital natural resources.
Increase Awareness of Climate Change and Environmental Issues
Educate local communities about climate change, its effects, and sustainable environmental practices through workshops, awareness campaigns, and community discussions.
Strengthen Disaster Risk Reduction and Early Warning Systems
Develop early warning systems for climate-related disasters (e.g., droughts, floods) to provide early alerts and enable communities to respond proactively. Enhance disaster preparedness and risk mitigation strategies to reduce vulnerability to climate-related hazards.
Promote Sustainable Livelihoods
Support the diversification of livelihoods to reduce dependency on climate-sensitive sectors (e.g., livestock and rain-fed agriculture) and build resilience through climate-smart practices. Promote alternative income-generating activities that are less susceptible to climate variability, such as ecotourism and green enterprises.
Future Goals
In the future, APRPC seeks to expand its programs to reach more communities across the
ASAL regions of Northern Kenya, refine its strategies based on ongoing assessments, and
build stronger partnerships to support sustainable pastoral development and peace in the
region.
